Comprehensive Gifted Programs
The CPS Gifted and Enriched Academic Programs are founded on the principle that all students are entitled to equal opportunity to develop in relationship to their abilities. A citywide network of program models and services is available to supplement, support, or modify the standard school program in order to challenge children identified as gifted and talented. These are students who consistently demonstrate superior general reasoning ability and/or potential to excel in a specific academic, creative, or artistic area.

Comprehensive Gifted Programs are available in selected neighborhood and magnet schools throughout the city and serve students in grades 1 through 8. The programs are full-time; all core subjects are accelerated and enriched. Students are selected based on local assessments.

Identification and Selection
A comprehensive identification process selects students based on program design and predefined criteria, including:
  • Standardized achievement scores
  • Standardized aptitude data
  • Teacher/parent/student nomination

Additional Requirements
  • Selection of students entering grades K through 2 is based on teacher checklist, rank order on the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), Miscue Analysis, or Illinois Snapshot of Early Literacy (ISEL).
  • Selection of students entering grades 3 through 8 is based on ISAT scores, or equivalent, in reading or math at or above the 50th percentile and teacher checklist.
